Helmut Kohl

"Birne muss Kanzler bleiben" (Pear must remain Chancellor), the satirical magazine Titanic stated in 1982 - and "Birne" remained Chancellor. Helmut Kohl headed the government for 16 years, more than any other Chancellor before or after him. And no Federal Chancellor has become so often the target of gloating criticism and parody, be it because of his popularity, his culinary preferences or also because of concrete political scandals. But Kohl was more than just a prophet of flourishing landscapes. In the early days of his political career, he was instrumental in modernising his CDU, driving European integration forward and, not least, going down in history as Chancellor of Unity.
