Western Australia's coast as seen by the Expedition 10 crew on the International Space Station. This image shows large solar salt works developed in Useless Loop and Useless Inlet. The salt is produced when ponds are repeatedly flooded with seawater, which is progressively concentrated by evaporation. This particular salt farm opened in 1967 and expanded operations in the 1990s. Today, this salt farm comprises over 50 ponds, the newest pond in the outermost pond in Useless Inlet, which provides the first evaporation cycle to increase the salinity of the water prior to entering the next pond. Complex chemical and biological adjustments occur in the system each time the configuration of ponds is changed.\nSSPL/SSPL

Recovery of pieces of Skylab in Western Australia, 1979.

The 82 tonne Skylab space station re-entered the Earth's atmosphere on 11th July 1979 and parts of it hit the Earth in Western Australia. Many large pieces were retrieved. Skylab had been launched on 14th May 1973 and was visited by three 3-man crews between May 1973 and February 1974 during its operational lifetime.\nSSPL/SSPL

Five Landsats were launched between 1972 and 1984 to study the Earth's surface in various spectral bands from the visible to the infrared with a resolution of about 30 metres. The Landsat programme is an ongoing one. Landsat 7, launched in 1999 is able to view the Earth's surface at a resolution of 15 metres, and the next satellite, Landsat 8, is scheduled to be launched into orbit in 2005. The satellites are used to provide information for map making, studies of land use, pollution monitoring and mineral prospecting.\nSSPL/SSPL

The Western Endeavour Express, pulled by two class 38 4-6-2 locomotives numbers 3801 and 3813 by Patrick Ransome-Wallis. The Western Endeavour Express ran from Sydney to Perth. Two locomotives were used for this trip as there was very little opportunity to add more water to the boilers on this journey.

Spear head, c 1960.

Serrated weapon made from bottle glass by aborigines living in the Northern Teritories of Central Australia. At the butt end of the spear head are remnants of the gum which was used to glue the spear to the shaft. Similar spear heads have also been found in Western Australia.

Baby in a cot, 1956.

A photograph of a baby looking out of her cot, taken by Photographic Advertising Limited in 1956. This image was used by the North Western Electricity Board, and also sold for use in Holland and Australia. Photographic Advertising Limited, founded in 1926, created multi-purpose stock images with the potential for selling a range of products. Whilst enjoying its greatest success during the 1930s, it continued in business until 1977. Their trademark, the staged studio photograph resembling a film still, was its selling point and, later, its downfall. Sophisticated, adaptable and generic, this kind of image gradually fell out of favour as clients increasingly demanded targeted advertising campaigns with specific photographs.

The de Havilland DH.66 'Hercules', 1929

Aerial view of a De Havilland 66 'Hercules', that has three Bristol Jupiter engines each with a power of 500 hp. This aircraft is used by the Western Australian Airways on the Cairo-India route, which is part of the Imperial Airline London - India. The aircraft can fly with two of the three engines at full capacity, as shown in the picture one propeller stands still - which ensures a high level of security.

Two wooden bull roarers, Western Australia, c 1870-1925.

One of these Aboriginal artifacts is perforated at both ends, the other at one end. They are decorated with a carved, rectilinear design. Both are from north west Wyndham, Western Australia. When attached to a cord and swung through the air, bull roarers emit a deep, vibrant, roaring sound. They are important in rituals in Australian Aboriginal society as well as in some South American cultures.

John Lindley, English botanist and horticulturalist, 1862-1865.

Carte de visite photograph by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company of Lindley (1799-1865). Lindley's 1828 report on the Royal Gardens at Kew saved the gardens from destruction, and the Royal Botanic Gardens were created there. He was the first professor of botany at the University of London (1829-1860), and assistant librarian to the botanist Joseph Banks. He was later professor of botany at Cambridge University. As one of Britain's foremost botanists, he described the plants from Mitchell's (1792-1855) expeditions to Australia (1838), and those of Drummond and Molloy from Western Australia. Lindley's chief publications were on orchids, and he also produced 'The Vegetable Kingdom' (1846).

'Great Britain' was the first screw-propelled, iron hulled vessel to cross the Atlantic. Designed and built under the supervision of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) in Bristol, the ship on completion in 1843 was twice the tonnage of any previous ship. It provided accommodation for about 360 passengers, and was used extensively for carrying emigrants to the USA and Australia, before running ashore in September 1846.

During the years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842' by John Cassin, (Philadelphia, 1858). This first US scientific expedition led by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes (1798-1877), visited South America, Samoa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, the Northwest coast of North America and the China Sea. Its aims were: to improve knowledge of the Pacific, the Hudson's Bay Company's settlements, and the Indian tribes and their allegiances, to explore trading opportunities, to record the flora and fauna encountered and to find a southern continent.

The Astrolabe was a French ship commanded by French navigator Jules-Sebastien-Cesar Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) on a scientific expedition of the Pacific. The aboriginals are depicted as ugly, child-like and simple, amazed by the mirror and shoes. In fact, aboriginals were indifferent to the trappings of western culture. Stone-headed axe from Queensland, Western Australia, Prehistoric.

This modern reproduction axe has a flat oval-shaped blade very similar to the oval implement used by our ancient ancestors. It is hafted by being set in gum in the bend of a flexible strip of wood. This method was probably also used by prehistoric peoples.
