Night of Broken Glass Remembrance
Germany, Berlin, November 09, 2020: ELLEN HAENDLER, who lost more than 80 relatives during the Nazi period, talks as people commemorate victims of the Nazi regime during a rally of at Levetzowstraße Deportation Memorial in Berlin-Moabit on the 82nd anniversary of the anti-Semitic November pogroms of November 9, 1938 also known as Kristallnacht or Night of the broken glasses. The attacks committed by the Nazis were the prelude to open violence against Jews. Around 400 Jews were murdered during the night, and hundreds more were arrested, deported, and tortured. More than 1,400 synagogues as well as thousands of stores, apartments and Jewish cemeteries were destroyed. The Association of Persecutees of the Nazi Regime/Federation of Antifascists (VVN-BdA) had called for remembrance despite the restrictions of the Corona pandemic take a stand against anti-Semitism.
