Ford model T car on display in the Science Museum, London, 2007.

Ford model T Tourer made in 1916. The Ford Model T was introduced by Henry Ford (1863-1947) in 1908, and made by the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. By means of true mass production, this car was affordable for far more people than ever before. By 1913 motorised production lines were in use, enabling the Model T to be made in such quantities that, in 1915, a tourer cost half the price it was when first introduced. The new production methods were so speedy that only one paint, japan black enamel, would dry fast enough to prevent problems, hence the remark attributed to Ford that 'Customers can have any color they want so long as it's black'. The Model T was hugely popular, and by the time it was phased out in 1927 over sixteen million vehicles had been made.

1-metre-long (1:5) model of a futuristic vehicle which aims to become a cheap and personalised mode of public transport, as an alternative to cars and current inefficient transport systems. It uses advanced navigation systems, intelligent cruise control, hazard avoidance braking systems and lane departure warning systems, with operating costs reduced by up to 50y not using a driver. The buses will use 85ess energy than private cars and be emission-free in sensitive zones like pedestrian precincts. It promises to dramatically cut traffic congestion, air pollution and energy use in cities in the future including London during the 2012 Olympics. The full system is predicted to be ready to interact with other modes of transport in a city setting by 2017.

Comet I model aeroplane, Blythe House, Science Museum, London, 2007.

Model of Comet I, in BOAC colours, sectioned to show the lines of breakup of Comet G-ALYP over Elba, North Italy, January 1954. The model was used in the Comet accident report at the Court of Enquiry, Church House, Westminster. Due to lack of space and because of the size of the collection, more than 170,000 of the Science Museum's objects are stored in Blythe House, former headquarters of the Post Office Savings Bank. Many of these objects have never been on public display.

The developers - Capoco Design, led by Alan Ponsford, in collaboration with the Royal College of Art - hope that people will be able to summon one of these driverless buses from their mobile phone to collect them from any location to be taken direct to any destination. It promises to dramatically cut traffic congestion, air pollution and energy use in cities in the future including London during the 2012 Olympics. The full system is predicted to be ready to interact with other modes of transport in a city setting by 2017.

Reginald Joseph Mitchell (1895-1937) trained as an engineer and worked as chief designer of the Supermarine Company during World War I. He then turned his hand to aeronautical engineering, developing the design of the famous Spitfire fighter plane used in World War II. Also on display here is a wind tunnel test model of the Mark 22 Spitfire.

Total lunar eclipse, 3 March 2007.

The red colouring arises because of the scattering of sunlight in the Earth's atmosphere. Sunlight reaching the Moon must pass through a long and dense layer of the Earth's atmosphere, where it is scattered by dust particles. Shorter wavelengths are more likely to be scattered by the small particles, and so by the time the light has passed through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths dominate. This resulting light we perceive as red. This image was at the end of totality.\nSSPL/SSPL

They are typically driven by a large clockwork mechanism with a globe representing the Sun at the centre and planets at the end of each of the arms. Mill engine, East Hall, Science Museum, London, 2007.

This 700 hp horizontal cross compound mill engine with Corliss valves, drove up to fifteen hundred weaving looms at the Finchley View Mill, Harle Syke in Burnley in Lancashire from 1903 to 1970. It was built for the mill in 1903 by Burnley Ironworks, and was later restored and installed in the Science Museum in 1979 by Riley & Son Ltd, Lancashire.
